Jv Soccer Loses Heartbreaker To Montreat

By Cory Guinn

Tigerville, SC – In a rematch with the Cavaliers of Montreat College, the North Greenville JV Soccer team lost a heartbreaker in the final minutes 2-1 on Thursday night in Pepsi Stadium.

Montreat scored its first goal in the 29th minute after a shot from 20 yards out slipped through the hands of North Greenville keeper Nick Williams.

The Crusaders tied the game just minutes later as Curtis Horn played a cross into the box that was finished on a one-timer by Corey Tillighast in the 36th minute of play. Tillinghast’s second goal of the season evened the score at 1-1 heading into the half.

After a second half that saw much back-and-forth action, the Cavaliers broke through with the game-winning goal in the 90th minute of play. Montreat squeezed a through ball past the Crusader defense and, after a shot was saved by Williams, the Cavaliers scored on the rebound.

North Greenville outshot Montreat 15-4 in the contest as Williams recorded two saves.

“Our guys played arguably the best game they have all year and the defesne only allowed four shots,” said head coach Kyle Walden. “The guys gave me everything they had and left it all on the field.”

The JV Soccer team (1-4-2) will have a week to prepare before playing host to Truett-McConnell College on October 20 in Pepsi Stadium at 5:30 p.m.
