SOFTBALL CLAIMS SECOND STRAIGHT NCCAA SOUTH REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
May 5, 2012
Cleveland, GA – One of the most successful seasons in North Greenville University softball history continues as the Crusaders earned their second straight NCCAA South Region Championship, beating out Point University on Saturday afternoon.
After beating Emmanuel College in an elimination game earlier in the day, Point moved on to the title game needing to win both games to avoid elimination. And avoid elimination they did with a 3-1 victory in the first game of the championship series.
The Skyhawks struck first in game one, scoring their first run of the game in the second inning after Felicia Lingerfelt scored on a suicide squeeze. However, the Crusaders quickly evened the score after an RBI single in the third inning by Courtney Campbell. Point put together a game-winning rally with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to secure the win.
Cassi Carpenter took the tough loss after pitching a complete game, allowing three runs on five hits, while Campbell was the strongest offensive performer, finishing the game 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sarah Armstrong also contributed on offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Kimberly Robertson was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
The final game of the tournament was all North Greenville as the Crusaders strung together eight runs on 10 hits while starter Rachel Glazebrook held the Skyhawks to one run on five hits to claim the 2012 NCCAA South Region Championship.
The Crusaders scored six runs through the first four innings of play before Point scored their only run of the game in the fifth inning. North Greenville scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the seven-run victory.
Glazebrook earned her 15th victory of the year after throwing her 14th complete game, allowing one run on five hits while striking out 10 to move her season total to 199 strikeouts.
The Crusaders had a host of contributors on offense including Armstrong and Robertson who each finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Campbell was also 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Kansas Wofford and Kendra Epting also recorded one RBI each.
After claiming the region title the Crusaders move on the NCCAA National Tournament beginning on May 9 in Botetourt County, VA. North Greenville will be defending their 2011 NCCAA National Championship against seven other NCCAA qualifiers.
