Crusaders Unable To Stop Eagles' Ground Attack

Jefferson City, TN – In a bid for back-to-back wins, the
North Greenville University football team dropped a road game to Carson Newman
College 52-10 on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles’ offense racked up 501 yards of offense,
including 363 yards and all seven touchdowns on the ground, while the Crusaders’
offense totaled 267 yards and the team’s first rushing touchdown of the season.
It took Carson Newman just 1:49 to score as the Eagles drove
down the field on a 7-play, 75 yard drive that ended with a Brandon Baker
4-yard touchdown run. After the Crusaders first series ended with a punt after
a three-and-out, the Eagles drove down the field on a 5-play, 46-yard drive to
gain a 14-0 advantage after a 3-yard touchdown run by Andy Hibbet.
Carson Newman ended the first quarter of play with a 1-yard
touchdown run from Brandon Haywood to make the score 21-0 after the first 15
minutes of play. Andy Hibbert scored his second touchdown of the game on a
2-yard run with 14 second remaining in the first half to give the Eagles a 28-0
lead going into the break.
The second half of action began just how the first half
ended as Carson Newman scored on a 54-yard run by Brandon Haywood after forcing
North Greenville to punt on its first possession of the half. After an
interception by the Eagles’ defense on the Crusaders’ ensuing series, Carson
Newman ran the ball into the end zone from nine yards out to extend the lead to
42-0 with 11:31 left in the third quarter.
On the following possession, North Greenville used a 7-play,
45-yard drive to make the score stand at 42-3 after Justin Gravely put a
school-record 47-yard field goal through the uprights.
The Eagles used a 37-yard field goal from Ben Ogle and a
1-yard touchdown run from David Freeman to make the score 52-3 before sophomore
quarterback Joey Carter drove the Crusaders 67 yards in five plays, ending with
a 4-yard run by freshman Darius Paulk, his first of his collegiate career, to make
the final score 52-10 in favor of Carson Newman.
Freshman Nelson Hughes completed 10-of-16 passes for 100
yards, while Carter finished the game 2-for-5 for 69 yards in the fourth
quarter. Paulk totaled 69 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries to lead the
ground attack. Senior Harold Small led all receivers with four receptions and
47 yards, while fellow senior Daniel Adderely recorded two catches for a
game-high 72 yards.
On defense, junior Michael Klein led the unit with 12 total
tackles, while sophomore Nick Rodgers totaled 11 tackles in the game. Senior
Stefan Bynoe harassed the quarterback all game, finishing with nine tackles,
one sack and one tackles for a loss, while fellow senior Jonathon Sharpe
recorded eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
The Crusaders (1-6) will return home for the homecoming game
against Brevard College on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m. in Younts Stadium.
