JV SOCCER WINS SECOND STRAIGHT GAME
By Cory Guinn
Tigerville, SC – The North Greenville University JV soccer team won its second straight game on Thursday evening, this time a 5-2 decision over the Cavaliers of Montreat College in Pepsi Stadium.
The Crusaders gained an edge early with a goal in the 4th minute of play as senior James Lobbestael crossed a ball into the box that was finished with a diving header from junior Bryce Harrison, his second goal of the season. Lobbestael gave the Crusaders a 2-0 halftime advantage with an unassisted goal in the 16th minute, his third of the season.
North Greenville’s offense continued to put the pressure on the Cavalier defense as Harrison scored his second goal of the game and third of the season in the 54th minute as he once again finished a cross from Lobbestael. The assist was Lobbestael’s second of the game and fourth of the season.
The fourth goal of the game for North Greenville came from the foot of freshman Thales Wieczorek who dribbled through four defenders and finished with his second goal of the season to put North Greenville up 4-0 in the 65th minute.
The Cavaliers got on the board in the 71st minute before senior Cameron Neal beat the Montreat keeper to score his second goal of the season to give the Crusaders a 5-1 advantage. Montreat’s final goal of the game came in the 79th minute to make the final score 5-1 in favor of North Greenville.
Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Duncan recorded five saves in 65 minutes of action before giving way to fellow freshman goalkeeper Pablo Dongarra, who recorded two saves in the final 25 minutes of action as North Greenville outshot Montreat 19-13 in the game.
“I was very pleased with the way the guys played tonight,” said head coach Kyle Walden. “They continue to improve in each game and their confidence is growing. I am impressed with where we are and I look forward to our next game.”
The Crusaders (3-3-1) will continue their six-game home stand as they host Brevard College on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
